4 Day . Outdoor Sketch to Studio Painting

The class will be spending approximately 2½ days outdoors developing sketches to be used for creating a medium sized studio painting. Ray will demonstrate his approach to gathering all pertinent aspects in the field respective to the finished painting; scouting, anticipating, painting quick color sketches, pre-mixing, editing, photo-referencing, and ultimately designing a studio painting. These are the “What’s.”

Next, the “How’s”. Ray will demonstrate and explain all facets; creating field sketches, thinking design (light and dark shapes), drawing with accuracy, working on values, relating color temperature and intensity, creating quick sketches, shooting good reference, and keeping track of all this!

In the studio, ultimately it’s design! You’ve gathered all the information in the field, now it’s time to edit. My approach is to make a visual statement, a complete thought in paint. Successful studio painting requires an idea with a totality, an iconograph, if you will, of your subject with accurate color and value, supporting elements. Ray will walk you through your idea and assist you with your approach and strategy.

We will paint from 9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m daily.
Transportation needed.
